Presentation and History

Secondary School "Polytechnic Hermenegildo Lanz"

The Secondary School "Polytechnic Hermenegildo Lanz" has had a long voyage through the history of education and is one of the oldest schools in the city of Granada, closely linked to the development of the city and its province.

It was initially created on April 1, 1936, as Work Elementary School, under the Statute of Vocational Training December 21, 1928, becoming then School of Industrial Master, according to the Industrial Vocational Education Training Act 1955. The General Education Act of 1970, name it National Polytechnic Institute of  Vocational Training and finally the Organic law on General Education System transforms it into what it is today, the Institute of Secondary Education "Polytechnic Hermenegildo Lanz"

The center, during the Republic, was initially located in a stately home of the Moreno Agrela's family, situated in the street Pavaneras number nine and his birth was the result of the work of the Local Vocational Training Board, chaired by the President of the Provincial Council D. Virgilio Castilla and formed by personalities like Hermenegildo Lanz, (set designer, cartoonist and designer, an eminent figure, along with Federico García Lorca and Manuel Angeles Ortiz, of the Granada movement vanguards of the twenties, member of the circle of Rinconcillo, partner and true friend of Manuel de Falla) and Antonio Gallego Burin professor of our University, director General of Fine Arts and then Mayor of the City of Granada.

The Education Minister Joaquín Ruiz Jimenez, planned the construction of the current building in the “Barrio de la Juventud”, and the project was made by the architect Carlos D. Pfeifer Formica-Corsi, beginning the construction in 1964 and ending in 1968. The work designed by Carlos Pfeifer is part of the international architectural movement known as rationalism, which breaks with the prevailing type of construction at the time, based on combined (brick, slate, fake fireplaces, flowerbeds, face bricks, traditional materials etc. ), with a clear modernity (clarity of form, clean straight lines, functionality, use of iron structure and glass, removal of architectural barriers in the entire ground floor, etc.), improper and innovative for the time.

Currently, the Polytechnic IES Hermenegildo Lanz of Granada is an academic institution built on its history and prestige. A studied proposal of priorities and the development of multiple actions, -educational, training and social- inserted in the context of strategic planning Europe 2020, puts us in a leading position, to a progress-oriented training built on the European approach, with education systems and Vocational Education Training systems firmly anchored in quality, in the right professional qualifications according to the job and suitable for transnational mobility.
